Do remember how crazy we all were almost exactly 4 years ago?
During the early days of COVID (when we were still calling it Coronavirus) I remember wiping down a pizza box and REHEATING the pizza because no one really knew what was going on.
Wayne County, Michigan had thousands of recorded deaths in early 2020 and was only surpassed by places like New York.
We were confronted with the potential of spreading an illness in an awful way. The misunderstandings and confusion of that time had everyone feeling like a carrier. Contact with any person could be a problem.
Can I ask you to keep that feeling in your head, and flip it upside down with me after we read a passage?
1 Corinthians 6
13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” d 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. e
18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Notice what Paul says about the Holy Spirit and the body of a believer.
1- Your body is “for the Lord.”
2– Your body is marked for resurrection by the Lord.
3– The Holy Spirit lives in your body.
4– Your spiritual union with Christ should define the use of your body.
Paul applies these ideas to warning the Corinthians about the abhorrence of immorality.
We certainly need that reminder in our porn-soaked age.
Christian, you’re united to Christ–don’t you dare take Him to the brothel or stream porn into His presence!
I want to also encourage you with an application beyond this warning.
Every person that comes in contact with you can come into contact with Jesus by the power of His Spirit in you!
Have you grappled with the potential of spreading life in a powerful way?
Oh, the mystery and worship of being a carrier of the Spirit!
As a temple-you can be a vessel for worship. Contact with any person could be transformative.
You’re not going to spread the Spirit of God by the touch of your hand but by the Words of your mouth.
What if we were more conscientious about spreading the Spirit than we were hesitant to spread COVID 4 years ago?
Instead of “stop the spread”… let’s get out there and start the spread!
