Questions are powerful.
Questions seek new information. Questions also reveal information about the one asking.
Not all questions work this way. Your barista at Starbucks wants to know your order and little else.
We understand this dynamic intuitively. Mom calls out, “Who left this dish in the sing!?” A friend says, “Why are you wearing that?” as you’re headed out the door together.
The question reveals an opinion, a concern, a frustration.
The question is doing something, not merely asking something.
I’m concerned that many voices are doing something with the questions they ask– sow doubt and unbelief. A deep faith and diligent thought are wonderful. Dive deep into the Word and meditate on truth.
But be mindful of the heart behind questions.
Some of our most logical questions can reveal the most dangerous lies. The children Israel had a very simple question in the wilderness, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?” (Psalm 78:19)
I’m sure they would have raised their hands innocently and said, “I’m just asking.” But the Scriptures tell us they were testing God. They were challenging God by asking questions against Him.
The unbelieving generation had seen God deliver them from Egypt. They saw the water from the Rock in the desert and knew the power of the God who tossed Pharoah and His army into the Red Sea.
Yet they still asked, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?” They were never just asking.
Beware the voices of deception cloaked as investigation. Listen to what questions reveal as much as what they ask. When the Serpent asked, “Did God really say?” He was not looking for information but making an accusation.
I’m not sure where logical doubts make permission for dangerous lies in your life. I want you to know this if you are asking “Can God really…?” the answer is very simple, “YES, HE CAN!”
He spreads a table in the wilderness.
He provides food for the hungry.
He raises the dead from the grace.
He transforms sinners.
He humbles the mighty.
He lifts the lowly.
He builds, restores, empowers…you name anything in His will…
YES, HE CAN!
