Horse Blinders & Fighting Lust
Horse blinders can serve a purpose, but not every purpose.
When you want to keep a horse focused on the path ahead and protect it from needless distractions, then blinders might serve you well.
Blinders may keep a horse from turning to the left or the right, but they don’t fundamentally change the animal and his instincts.
Blinders are made for horses and humans are made for more.
Why are many Christians, especially men, settling for blinders in their sexual purity?
I’ve encountered far too many Christian men who talk like their immoral sexual desires are an inevitability.
They give far too much credit to animal instincts and too little credit to the Spirit of God!
Chrisitan men should not be naive, sexual desires are a vulnerability and we should never be too proud to take precautions, set boundaries, and embrace discipline that encourages self-control.
A Christian man that has biblical sexual desires, will have them for his wife and his wife alone.
Too many people pretend that lust is an inevitability and miss the opportunity to join with the Spirit in killing the flesh!
Too many men are willing to grant the flesh permission to exist by talking and acting as if they are only animals with instincts.
It is wonderful to get a filter on your phone, delete or screen social media, and take other precautions.
It is damnable to excuse wrong thoughts and desires when the world inevitably finds paths to deliver temptation to you.
So let me be blunt.
NO! Seeing an attractive woman then desiring or imagining an intimate encounter is not merely natural–it is evil.
NO! Comments or thoughts about the sexual attractiveness of any woman are not acceptable–they are fleshly.
NO! Lust is not an essential part of manhood–look at Jesus!
When sinful sexual desires are treated as normal, we feed the flesh, and we court disaster.
Here’s the exciting part– every man who reads this already knows how to live this way!
Paul tells Timothy…
and [treat] younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
1 Timothy 5:2
Can you recognize female beauty? Just like when you tell your mom or your sister that they looked beautiful at the last wedding you all attended.
Can you be around a woman in yoga pants or a swimsuit without thinking immorally? Sure–just like the last family party or day at the pool together.
Can you see a woman and deeply know her and care for her without thinking of her in sexual categories?
Yes! Have you met your mother? Your sister? Your Grandmother?
Don’t settle for blinders and don’t excuse animal instincts… embrace the true purity the Spirit will empower you toward!
Lust is a battle, don’t get me wrong, but please set your sights higher as you keep your eyes up!
